Couple in Mediation

What is it?

There are techniques to minimize conflict and prevent hostile workplace environments. There is not one single strategy that works, but there are a number or tools or techniques used to create a positive climate. Some simple preventative frameworks include written polices, effective management, careful hiring, fair grievance processes, an open door policy, reviews, mediation, fair terminaiton processes, open communication, and manager conflict resolution training. Besides these helpful tips, there are other techniques used.

Resolution Techniques

  • Forcing/Competing: pushing a viewpoint at the expense of another to provide a quick resolution

  • Collaborating: working with another person to find a 'win-win' situation to be mutually beneficial that requires commitment from both parties

  • Compromising: finding a mutually acceptable solution that partially satisfies both parties

  • Withdrawing/Avoiding: a person withdraws from the conflict to avoid any disagreement and further conflict

  • Accommodating: strategy when one party gives in to the other's demands to be cooperative

  • Management should encourage trust, professionalism, organization, and communication to prevent some conflicts
